A Tradition in our movie loving family is to throw an Oscar party every year. We dress up, decorate, eat tasty food and print ballots to guess who will win. It's a really fun tradition and with the Academy Awards coming up next week I thought I'd share a few things you can do to have your own Oscar party!
1. Back drop
To create a mood and transform your home I recommend creating some sort of large backdrop. It makes a focal point for the room and will put people in a party mindset.
To make mine I used a roll of black foam board and painted the gold frame, I found the idea here.
3 other backdrop inspirations: 1,2,3 I would use these tutorials, with an oscar color palette.

2. Food and drink
When considering food for the party I use these questions to help me plan: Does it feel special? Is it decadent? easy to to eat (and still converse?) does it have movie nostalgia or ties to any of the current movies nominated?
If I don't have the time of desire to make the food myself, Trader Joes has some great finger food . You can also go to Joanns and get some edible gold glitter to add to your food, giving it a little extra Oscar glam. I you are going to do a classic like popcorn and licorice, elevate it. Fancy black licorice bites and these popcorn recipes are my go to.
Now, perhaps my favorite tip, ( I don't drink alcohol but I love to drink fancy drinks. In fact I'm sort of on a mission to demand more than "pepsi products and our house made lemonade" as drink options at restaurants. ) is a the bar, in my case a Mocktail bar. It's fun and creates an activity and conversation during the party.

For Mocktail recipes go here! and for new recipes stay tuned, I will add more after this years oscars.
3. Have a dress code
Not everyone will stick to it, but this tip also helps to put people in party mode. As important as your decor, it creates atmosphere. Your dress code could be as simple as Dress nice, or some years we've had themes like Paris in the 20's . This year it might be Star wars, who knows.
4. Movie quote Photo Booth
Our Family, I'm sure like a lot of movie loving families , have our favorite quotes that are a part of our everyday lives. Prior to the party I asked everyone to text me some of their favorites and cut them into quote bubbles for a fun photo booth.
5. Ballots
Traditionally we print ballots for everyone and compete for who can guess the most wins. You can offer a prize or just do it for fun. This year I'm printing them from HERE.
You can also print some great bingo cards HERE.

And that's it! Most of all have fun and enjoy the Oscars Feb. 28th.
